PFA (Protection from Abuse) Order

Charged with abuse in Philadelphia?

The Pennsylvania Protection from Abuse (PFA) Act describes abuse as one or more of the following acts between persons of an intimate connection (Married couples, family or household members, those who share biological parenthood):

  • Causing another to be put in reasonable fear of imminent serious bodily injury, by threatening physical violence
  • Falsely imprisoning another
  • Physical or sexually abusing a child who is of minor age
  • Attempting to, or intentionally and knowingly causing bodily injury, rape, sexual assault, indecent assault, incest, or involuntary deviate sexual intercourse
  • Engaging in a course of conduct which is intended to put another in reasonable fear of bodily injury, such as stalking or harassment

A PFA order acts as a restraining or stay-away order , and its purpose is to keep an abuser away from their intended victim, as well as the victim's children. The accused individual may be forced to leave their home in order to comply with the terms of the order. Should the accused later violate the order, they may face penalties that include incarceration. If you have been given a PFA order after being accused of abuse, and feel that the order was given unfairly or in error, contact a Philadelphia domestic violence attorney right away.
